US State Department report on Georgia

Despite of some human rights violations, Georgia has carried out very serious reforms. The annual Report of the US State Department reads about the situation in human rights area, GHN reports.

The Report reads that in 2009 in the country there were cases of violent murders, kidnapping, political persecution, mass media freedom limitation and other cases. But at the same time there are considerable achievements in questions of Criminal Code reform, and in the judicial system - the introduction of a practice of the jury.
The reforms were carried out in the Elections Code, which stipulate election of the City Mayor by the direct elections.
The Report touched a subject of human rights on the occupied territories, in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The report reads that in Abkhazia there are facts of assault by Abkhazians and Russian occupational forces upon the peaceful Georgian dwellers.

"Secessionists prohibited the entrance of international observers into the region, "- the document reads.
