Bulgarian Politicians Cable Condolences to Polish Counterparts after Polish President, Other Top Officials Die in Plane Crash

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov cabled his condolences to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in connection with the plane crash which killed Poland's President Lech Kaczynski, the central bank head and the country's military chief, along with 93 people travelling on board the TU-154 aircraft which crashed Saturday in thick fog on its approach to its intended destination in the Russian city of Smolensk.

In the cable Borissov offers the condolences, sympathy and solidarity with the people of Poland of the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian people.

President Georgi Purvanov, National Assembly Chairperson Tsetska Tsacheva, Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Bulgarian National Bank Governor Ivan Iskrov too cabled condolences.

Among the other casualties of the crash were Kaczynski's wife Maria, along with Slawomir Skrzypek, who had been central bank governor since 2007, the chief of Poland's military Franciszek Gagor and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer.

The Polish delegation was en route to commemorate Poles killed in mass murders in the town of Katyn under orders from Soviet leader Josef Stalin in 1940.

Flowers and candles began to be laid in front of the building of the Polish Embassy in Sofia. The Polish national flag at the Embassy is flying half-mast.

"This is a big loss for Poland and for the families of the victims, a huge tragedy," said a woman who was putting flowers in front of the Embassy building.
