Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy released a joint statement regarding Georgia.
The EU high-ranking officials said Georgia will remain an important partner for the European Union and that the EU would adhere to its commitments.
The statement also mentions the forthcoming 2012 parliamentary elections in Georgia. "Election Law should be respected, and supremacy of law should be observed. All parties and candidates have to contribute to the establishment of peaceful election environment," reads the statement.
Georgian parties both the ruling United National Movement and oppositional ones evaluated the statement as positive. They claim that both the authorities and opposition should share the responsibility on holding the elections fairly.
