/MOLDPRES/. President Nicolae Timofti has rejected a request by an initiative group to hold a referendum on Moldova's accession to the Eurasian Customs Union. Vlad Turcanu, the spokesman for the Moldovan president, said today that the initiative runs counter to Moldova s European integration path.
The main reason for the presidency not to support the referendum initiative was the finding of the Central Electoral Commission that 85 per cent of the signatures that the initiative group had collected in favour of the referendum were forged.
"The subject proposed for the referendum, i. e. Moldova's accession to the treaties on the creation of the Eurasian Economic Community, runs counter to the European vector of the Republic of Moldova set by the citizens at the last parliamentary elections," Turcanu said.
"Moldova's pro-European vector was established on 24 March 2005 by a decision that was unanimously adopted by all parliamentary parties through large consensus," Turcanu said.
The president believes that by "by initiating a referendum based on false grounds and visibly lacking perspective, someone seeks to block the European integration interests, to destabilize the political situation in the country and to continuously polarize society".
