Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney went in search of the Hispanic vote to boost his flagging campaign.
He chose to address the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Los Angeles and pointed out that Hispanic unemployment is running at 10 per cent, while the national average is 8.1.
Romney offered to work with Democrats to overhaul US immigration:
"I will work with Republicans and Democrats to permanently fix our immigration system. We will never achieve a legal immigration system that is fair and efficient if first we don't get control of our borders. I believe we can all agree that what we need are fair and enforceable immigration laws that will stem the flow of illegal immigration."
It is estimated that 12 million illegal immigrants live in the United States and last year alone the country spent some 3.6 billion US dollars on border security.
