Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II made a special statement regarding the facts of prisoners' torture in Gldani # 8 Prison today.
Ilia II has called on the government to establish a special commission, which will be in charge of investigating the torture facts in prisons and guarantee protection of the rights of the inmates. He held a briefing at Georgia's Patriarchate.
"On my behalf and on behalf of the Holy Synod, we have already addressed all Georgia. Yesterday and today, we have seen horrifying video footage depicting what is going on in our prisons.
We condemn this and call on the society to form a special commission, which will investigate these facts and work to provide defense of the rights of prisoners," Ilia II said.
