Eka Zghuladze, deputy minister of internal affairs will fulfill the duties of the minister after the resignation of Bacho Akhalaia.
Eka Zghuladze made a special statement late last night:
"Today, in response to the outrageous crime committed in the prison, I will ensure that patrol police is under the full disposal of George Tugushi, new Minister of the penitentiary system to assist him in eradication of this horror in prison. There were times when all state institutions were as closed and ruthless as this prison, when organized crime devastated our social life. This time has ended and we will never go back! I allow myself to state this, as 18 years ago, I myself was the victim of police violence and therefore, I am fully aware of my words and situation that we have in Georgia today. There is no place for violence in Georgia and this ministry will ensure that our children and parents continue to feel safe and free, including during the elections in 12 days. Our people will make their choice in free and peaceful environment. This ministry will guarantee this."
Minister of internal affairs Bacho Akhalaia quit a post yesterday. The statement regarding the resignation was published on the web page of the Ministry:
"As the citizen of Georgia I am deeply horrified with the crime that has been revealed in Gldani N8 prison. Despite the fact that I am no longer in charge of penitentiary system, some of the members of current direction, who were obliged to prevent such horrible facts, started their carrier in the system under my leadership. For that reason, I feel moral and political responsibility since we failed to abolish this terrible practice and therefore I appeal to the president about my resignation", - the statement reads.
