The president of "EU - Georgian, Abkhazian and Ossetian International Movement - for peace, democracy and development" (EUGAO), Professor Nestan Kirtadze, participated in high-level meeting organized by Security and Defense Agenda in the European Parliament in Brussels, the capital of the European Union, on September 27.
In the framework of meeting, leaders of action and thought in the field of Trans-Atlantic security discussed questions of regional stability and arms proliferation. Key representatives of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the United States of America, Russia and the European Union participated in the meeting, which lasted more than 5 hours.
Prof. Kirtadze talked with Amb. Alexander Vershbow, Deputy Secretary General of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO); Mr. Ioan Mircea Paşcu, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, European Parliament; Mr. Reza Aslan, Adjunct Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations; and Mr. Giles Merritt, Director
Amb. Alexander Vershbow taken for analysis official statement of EUGAO about current political situation developments in Georgia, especially concerning the latest horrifying revelations about situation in Georgian prisons. Inhumane treatment, tortures and striking facts of violence, committed with awareness, blessings and silent approval of Georgian officials cannot pass unnoticed by international community. As a chairman of EUGAO, Prof. Kirtadze requested to consider assembling international commission involving participation of the US, EU and the United Nations observers and investigators from the representatives of the international community.
The statement was also delivered to the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Martin Schulz.
Apart of presenting and passing for further analysis official statement, Prof. Nestan Kirtadze discussed with future partners potential collaborations, which can enforce positions of EUGAO in its strive for realization of declared goals.
Mr. Giles Merritt, who is apart of being Director of influential Security & Defense Agenda holds the position of Secretary General of one of the most prominent European think tanks - Friends of Europe, discussed with Prof. Kirtadze possible involvement of both organizations in project of direct dialogue between Georgians, Abkhazians and South Ossetians on these platforms in near future.
Mr. Reza Aslan, recognized specialist and writer on Middle Eastern politics from Council of Foreign Affairs in New York, will connect EUGAO with top American experts on Caucasian politics and present them official statement of EUGAO on situation in current Georgian politics.
Official visit of Nestan Kirtadze to Brussels, where the headquarters of "EU-Georgian, Abkhazian and Ossetian internaciomal Movement" is located, will continue until Friday evening.
