The Five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany have met in New York to discuss Iran's nuclear programme.
The increased activity comes at a time of rising tension between Israel and Iran and the need to find a solution to the decade-long dispute.
The US believes the diplomacy will lead to more talks with Tehran.
Catherine Ashton is the EU Foreign Affairs representative:
"We discussed at length the need for Iran to take action urgently as we considered the Iranian nuclear issue. I will, from that meeting, now be in touch again with Iran to continue this process. Thanks very much."
The tension spilled out on to the streets of New York when an Iranian diplomat had to be escorted by police after he was surrounded and threatened by a mob close to the UN building.
Thousands of demonstrators had gathered as Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at the UN.
