There has been another mortar strike from Syria in the border town of Akcakale. This time, no one was hurt. But according to witnesses, a short time later eight artillery shells were heard being fired in retaliation.
Ankara has vowed to retaliate against the shelling. Turkey's parliament has approved legislation allowing cross-border operations.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Damascus not to test Turkey's patience. "You must be ready for war at any time", he said, "if you are not ready, you are not a state or a nation. As our forefathers said, ‘if you want peace, prepare for war.'"
A Turkish border unit also returned fire after a mortar bomb hit an uninhabited area of Altinozu on the western end of the border.
This is the fifth consecutive day of Turkish retaliation against incoming bombardment from northern Syria.
The violence is continuing inside Syria as well.
State media and opposition activists have said a car bomb exploded near the police headquarters in the capital, Damascus. At least one person is believed to have died.
