Georgian law enforcers detained Giorgi Kalandadze, Head of the United Headquarters. Kalandadze was detained this morning at Defense Ministry.
Tea Tsulukiani, Minister of Justice attended the detention operation. Zurab Shamatava, Head of the Fourth Brigade was also detained this morning.
An emergency news briefing was held at Prosecutor's Office regarding the detention operation. Archil Kbilashvili, Chief Prosecutor reported that Kalandadze is accused of misuse of power.
According to Tsulukiani, Kalandadze's two apartments were searched. Kbilashvili said the detainees face up to 5-8 years in prison.
Investigation revealed that in October 2011, former Minister Bacho Akhalaia, Chief of Joint Staff Giorgi Kalandadze and the 4th Brigade Commander Zurab Shamatava abused 6 military personnel in the Minister's office, Chief Prosecutor Archil Kbilashvili said at a briefing.
According to him, Akhalaia hit one of the military officers in the head with a knife handle. The Chief Prosecutor said that Akhalaia then took the soldiers to the Vaziani briefing room, where they were still abused physically and verbally.
"Yesterday and this morning the following persons were detained: Bachana Akhalaia, Zurab Shamatava and Giorgi Kalandadze. They will be indicted within legal terms ", said Archil Kbilashvili said.
According to him, given the high public interest towards, the testimonies of the witnesses, which testified against the above-mentioned detainees, will become public in the nearest hours. ‘Their testimonies will be posted on the official webpage of the Justice Ministry', the Prosecutor said.
Bacho Akhalaia, Georgia's former Minister of Internal Affairs will be presumably charged today. The court will then discuss presentment of prison sentence.
Akhalaia will be indicted within 48 hours. The former minister faces 5-8 years of imprisonment. Akhalaia is held at pre-detention cell of Ministry of Internal Affairs. His lawyer Davit Dekanoidze already visited him.
Akhalaia was questioned at Chief Prosecutor's Office last evening. He arrived at Prosecutor's Office at 20:30. The lawyer says Akhalaia was interrogated about the period when he was a defence minister. Questions concerned abuse and ungrounded dismissal of employees. Dekanoidze claims that accusations presented against him are groundless.
MPs of parliamentary majority and minority commented on Akhalaia's detention. The majority MPs said that his detention is the beginning of civilized legislation process.
The minority MPs claim that exceeding of authorities by Akhalaia is the groundless allegation.
There were legal grounds for detention of former interior minister Bacho Akhalaia and head of the Joint Staff Giorgi Kalandadze, Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili told journalists at the Courtyard by Marriot Hotel.
According to the Prime Minister, he does not have concrete information regarding the above-mentioned issue and had not participated in the process.
‘It was not a political detention and there were legal grounds for it. Everything took place within the law. I had not taken part in these processes and I can't say anything more', Ivanishvili said.
