The prospect of a unified Syrian opposition based inside the country is moving closer. Talks overseen by the Arab League have been taking place in Qatar.
The idea is to bring together the main Syrian National Council with other opposition groups to form a new 60-member leadership united against President Bashar al-Assad. Riad Seif, the author of the proposal said:
"For the first time it seems that this unification is possible, with love and understanding. This meeting is different, there is significant presence of different opposition members and the mood is brilliant"
Failure to put forward a united front against the Assad regime has attracted criticism from the international community in particular the United States. The SNC is hesitant because it would only be allocated 22 seats on the new body. It says it will make a final decision on Friday afternoon after internal elections.
