Israel and the US have both condemned the UN's decision to upgrade the Palestinian's status to a non-member observer state, claiming it will be
counterproductive to future peace negotiations.
Mark Regev, the spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "I know that they are celebrating tonight in Ramallah but the truth is when the party is over and when people wake up tomorrow morning they'll see that nothing has changed; that the reality on the ground remains as is. The only way way forward is not meaningless theatre at the United Nations; the only way forward is to have meaningful peace talks."
Washington was also highly critical of the UN resolution claiming it placed another obstacle on the road to peace. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said: "The Palestinian Authority, which has issued the violent path of Hamas and others, pursued a diplomatic move at the UN that is counterproductive to the cause of a negotiated peace.'‘
