Office of the Public Defender of Georgia has released a special statement regarding the incident that occurred in the village of Tsintskaro a few days ago. The office of the PD calls on the prosecutor`s office to carry out adequate and timely measures for protecting the rights of the Muslim population of the village.
`Unfortunately, the developments in the village of Tsintskaro is the second incident in Georgia, when the orthodox population clashes with Muslim ones and objects to the implementation of their religious freedom. The similar incident took place in the village of Nigvziani in October 2012.
Designate of the public defender of Georgia has addressed with specific recommendations to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia following the incident of the Nigvziani village but no answer has been given yet.
As similar facts may become a reason of conflict based on religious differences among Georgian citizens, we call upon all corresponding bodies to carry out timely and effective measures for evading dangerous facts,` the statement says.
The clash between the orthodox and Muslim residents of Tsintskaro village occurred last Friday. Non-Muslim residents of the village objected to the opening of a chapel two months ago.
