President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovich talked with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel on telephone following his conversation with the president of the European Commission. Markel discussed situation in Ukraine, condemned violence and said that the government of the country should be held responsible for peace and security of its people.
Russian Vice PM Arkadi Dvorkovich has also talked about the developments in Ukraine with Reuters news agency. He said Russia supported trilateral negotiations to resolve the political crisis in Ukraine.
Washington has also commented on the situation in Ukraine. White House spokesman Jay Carney strongly condemned the fighting that has erupted in Kiev, urging all sides of the conflict to move towards a peaceful resolution. Carney blamed Ukraine`s government for the tensions and said that the fiery street battles were a direct result of the government failing to acknowledge the `legitimate` grievances of its people. Carney urged Yanukovych to repeal the anti-democratic legislation.
U.S. Vice President has underscored that freedoms of assembly and expression are fundamental pillars of a democratic society and must be protected. While emphasizing that violence by any side is not acceptable, the Vice President underscored that only the government of Ukraine can ensure a peaceful end to the crisis and further bloodshed would have consequences for Ukraine's relationship with the United States.
