Government of Georgia has decided to start
works on the establishment of technical inspection of vehicles.
Vehicle emissions are a major source of air
pollution in Georgia. Its share of the country's total emissions is about 71
percent.
It should be noted that the air pollution
regulation on subcompact cars (approximately 80 percent of all cars) has not
been enforced in the last 9 years in Georgia, as since 2004 relevant tests
aimed to determine a vehicle's technical conditions is voluntary.
Technical malfunctions
of motor vehicles not only produce air pollution which affects people’s health,
but it is also strongly related to causing thousands of accidents most of which
entail severe injuries or death results.
Hence, the government decided to gradually
introduce the regulations with a view to streamlining the transport sector. At
this point, it is decided that Quality Mark - Association TUV will enter
Georgia and engage in the implementation of technical inspection of the system.
TUV represents a commercial structure, having the biggest certification rights,
together with the French SGS.
Technical inspection of vehicles will start on
March 1, 2015. In the next couple of month MIA Service Agency will establish
norms and standards by which the inspection will be carried out, taking into
account the current state of affairs in Georgia in this regard, reports GHN
according to Georgian Government’s information.
According to preliminary estimates, the impact
of harmful emissions will be reduced by 25 percent a year after the system
comes into force, with consistent, comprehensive measures taken in subsequent
years.
