Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili met with the UN
Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon. The meeting focused on the importance of the
United Nations' role in the peaceful resolution of the Russian-Georgian
conflict. Among others, the necessity of UN’s active involvement in the international
negotiations in Geneva was highlighted.
Georgian side provided detailed information to the Secretary-General about the severe
situation of safety and human rights in the occupied regions, which is of
particular concern considering absence of international mechanisms within the
territory.
Special attention was paid to the facts of erecting wire loops and
artificial barriers along the occupation line by the Russian occupation forces,
which is a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and the
ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008.
According to the Prime Minister, the fact threatens the country's stability and
the safety of the population living in the occupied regions, as well as to
their surroundings, reports GHN according to Prime Minister's Press Service
information.
